august guild meeting: knitted toys!

Looking for a fun, fast knitted gift to jump start your holiday gift knitting? Always wanted to try your hand at knitting toys, but they looked too complicated and/or fiddly?

This month, you can do both as we explore knitted toys while making these adorable knitted owls! These are tinier than they look, requiring less than 50 yards of yarn! So dig through your stash for those leftover odds and ends--this project is a great stashbuster! (and if you have a lot of small leftovers, consider a striped owl!) We'll start with the garter stitch bottom, then pick up and knit stitches in the round to create the body. With one seam that forms the top of the head, this is an almost no-sew project!
Skills covered:
  • picking up stitches
  • knitting in the round
  • seaming

Supplies to bring:
  • small amounts of leftover yarn, approximately 50 yards of worsted weight if you want a solid color owl (any size will work, bulkier yarns will create larger owls)
  • five double-point needles that are two sizes smaller than called for the yarn weight (for worsted weight yarn, bring size 5 or 6 needles). Note: circulars will work, but you'll want a small cable, a size appropriate for knitting socks (or you could do magic loop if you're familiar with that method as well).
  • yarn needle (for seaming)
  • pair of buttons for eyes
The white and orange felt for the nose and eyes, along with fiberfill to stuff with will be provided for you!

The Golden Triangle Knitting Guild will hold its August meeting on Thursday, August 23 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. in Room #204 of the First United Methodist Church in Starkville (200 Lampkin Street). As always, newcomers are welcome!
