Grab your coffee, it’s hazelnut time! This pattern is the Hazelnut
Stitch, an ornamental stitch. Ornamental stitches add texture and flair
to your knitting. Other examples of ornamental stitches are bobbles,
embossed leaves and bells, smocking etc. This is one of the more simpler
ornamentals, but will give you an idea of how they are created.
Pattern #5:
KEY:
(K1, yo, k1) in same st: k1 but leave st on needle, yarn over, then knit into the same st again and pull st off needle.
P3tog: purl the next three sts together.
Notes:
Stitch counts will change in Rows 1, 4, 7 and 10. (1 and 7 increase, 4 and 10 decrease back down)
Setup:
The
Hazelnut pattern is a repeat of 4 plus 3, so we have to decrease our
total sts count by one st. To do this unknit 5 sts in the last row you
knit (the 6th row of your border section), then K2tog and K3 border sts.
You should have 29 sts now.
Row 1: (RS) K3, [*P3, (K1, yo, K1) in next st, rep from * to last 3 pattern sts, P3], K3
Row 2: K3, [K3, *P3, K3, rep from * to last 3 pattern sts], K3.
Row 3: K3, [*P3, K3, rep from * to last 3 pattern sts] P3, K3.
Row 4: K3, [K3, *P3tog, K3, rep from * to end], K3.
Row 5: K3, [P across], K3.
Row 6: K all.
Row 7: K3, [P1, *(K1, yo, K1) in next st, P3, repeat from * to last 2 pattern sts, (K1, yo, K1) in next st, P1], K3
Row 8: K3, [K1, *P3, K3, rep from * to last 4 pattern sts, P3, K1], K3.
Row 9: K3, [P1, *K3, P3, rep from * to 4 pattern sts, K3, P1], K3.
Row 10: K3, [K1, *P3tog, K3, rep from * to last 4 pattern sts, P3tog, K1], K3.
Row 11: K3, [P across], K3.
Row 12: K all.
Repeat these 12 rows 3 times.
Knit 6 rows, in the first row, do a M1 increase after your 3 border sts to get back to 30 sts overall.
